Two dinosaurs that were misunderstood for decades, and the evidence that eventually corrected the record.

Students often read “scientists were wrong” as “science failed”. This sheet reframes self-correction as the mechanism rather than the malfunction — and asks whether the original conclusions were actually unreasonable at the time.

Scientists get things wrong. What makes science different is not that it avoids mistakes — it is what happens next. Both dinosaurs below were misunderstood for decades.

4Neither name was ever corrected. Why not?

The rules of scientific naming do not allow a species to be renamed just because the name turned out to be wrong or unfair.

5Was the first conclusion unreasonable?

Given only the evidence they had at the time, was it a fair conclusion to draw? Being wrong and being careless are not the same thing.

6Find a third example

Search the atlas for another specimen where understanding changed. Iguanodon, Deinocheirus, Coelophysis and Spinosaurus are good places to start.

The idea

Students often read "scientists were wrong" as "science failed". This sheet reframes it: self-correction is the mechanism, not the malfunction. Section 5 is the pivot — it asks students to judge a past conclusion against the evidence available at the time, which is a genuinely difficult and worthwhile distinction.

The two case studies

Both were reasonable readings of the evidence available. That is the point of section 5.
